What Really Happens When YOU Eat Fat? | The Truth
How many times have you heard that you simply need to take in fewer calories and you’re going to automatically lose weight?
Well, that’s partially true. Yes, it’s possible to lose weight while restricting calories that may make you healthy though. And it is unsustainable for most people. Some nutritionists and physicians have their patients on a low calorie diet, but they don’t tell them how to eat appropriate foods. To put this in perspective, you can eat a sweet potato and get the same number of calories that you get from eating half of a candy bar.
Does that mean that you should eat the sugar loaded process candy bar? Well, we’ve gotten sold the myth that a calorie is a calorie. Some people believe that you can eat what you want. If you cut calories. And that thinking is flawed and can truly wreck your health.
Remember skinny people get cancer and heart disease, too.
When you want to lose weight, you should consider putting yourself in a calorie deficit. The problem is many people go on crash diets and cut their calories too much. And that’ll make you lose muscle and not only fat. You also want to make sure that you’re eating good quality whole foods and not just processed junk foods.
Science has shown us that a diet high in healthy fats does not cause weight gain, contrary to what you’ve been told.
You want to eat high-fat foods that pack a nutritional punch.
These foods won’t spike your insulin and they also will not cause you to crave more foods. Quality foods satiate you and they contain tons of nutrients that your body needs. Look at pretty much any study out there, when you eat fats, eat fats for breakfast or even lunch, you eat fewer calories throughout the day. It helps hold you over.
When we talk about consuming large amounts of fat, we don’t mean grabbing some fries and burgers from the local fast food place. When trying to lose weight or dial in the right fats for your health you want to take in things like: fatty meats, fish, butter, olive oil, even avocados, cheese, coconut products, nuts and seeds, and even MCTs.
These foods have healthy fats and aren’t filled with sugar. These are natural sources of fats and they don’t contain processed ingredients. Some people switch to a high-fat diet and don’t see results right away. And they may get tempted to go back to their prior way of eating, which means lots of carbs, lots of sugars.
Quality Matters
When incorporating more fats into your diet, it’s easy to over-consume. Remember fats are very caloric dense. If your goal is to lose weight, it’s important to know. Eat excessive amounts of fat so that your body will burn the stored fat as fuel.
Once you become fat adapted, your body will be much more efficient at burning those unwanted fat cells. This is called the state of ketosis, and this is why so many people love following the ketogenic diet.
We often talk about wanting to lose weight, but what we need to do is lose fat. We don’t want to lose lean muscle mass.
When you have belly fat, your cortisol levels are high and that’s a stress hormone that helps your body survive if there’s a threat. Elevated cortisol causes insulin and blood glucose to soar. Eating a diet rich in whole foods can actually lower your cortisol levels.
Whatever your health goals are, I highly recommend using an app on your phone that can really help you track everything that you’re eating so that you can really dial in specifically how much fat you’re eating, how much protein and also your carb intake.
You want to be eating whole foods as much as possible.
Avoid hydrogenated oils. These cause inflammation in the body and will make you feel awful. Be cautious about any processed foods. Having a treat here and there is going to be fine. It’s not going to totally wreck your diet, but it’s not going to help stay on course.
The problem is that many foods get labeled keto-friendly, but maybe loaded with sugar. If you look up recipes online, make sure that these contain sweeteners like monk fruit, allulose xylitol, or even erythritol. Stevia is best.
When you consume more fat, you must really watch out how you feel after eating the different foods, pay attention to your body. Sometimes we have a lot of gut issues that we already have prior to starting the diet, and we have to focus on healing those as well in this process, when we’re trying to lose weight.
A few things you may notice when eating more fats.
Some people feel a little tired at first. This is referred to as the keto flu. In most cases, don’t let it worry you because it’s really common. It happens because your body starts to flush a lot of electrolytes out. What you can do to counteract that and balance your body back out and start consuming more electrolytes in the form of an electrolyte powder. You can put more Himalayan salt on your food. You can even put some Himalayan pink salt into your water.
If you have stomach issues, when eating high amounts of fat, you can just back off a little bit, that’s something that back off, and then you can slowly add more in.
If you’re somebody who has a gallbladder issue, you also may have a little bit of a struggle with a high-fat diet. It doesn’t mean that you can’t do it. It just means that you have to modify and tweak it a little bit at first and then enter into the high fat stage slowly.
Research shows that low fat diets simply do not work. In some studies, they even get linked to early death. Other research shows a high likelihood of heart issues in other diseases.
Your body needs fat to function at its best.
Fat assists muscle movement in also blood clotting. It also works to protect your nerves. Your brain needs fat in order to be healthy; it’s made of roughly 80% fat. Imagine following a low fat diet, your brain will struggle.
When you eat fat, your body absorbs vitamins and minerals from foods that you consume much better.
When people follow a low fat diet they often eat refined grains like rice and bread. These people tend to gain weight. And even though they think they’re eating a healthy diet, one of the reasons behind this is that these foods make us want to overeat. Foods that are highly processed, have additives that lead to more consumption. We simply don’t feel satisfied even when we’re eating regular amounts of food. These foods also make people lethargic and can produce a cycle of illness when you don’t eat natural foods meant for your body, you will never feel at your best.
The main takeaway here is that eating fat is entirely natural.
We have been told, for so long, that fat is going to make us fat and we’ve believed it. It was a lie all along. It may seem odd at first to change your diet because what we once thought was healthy is not, but habits sometimes are hard to break. The good news is that we are able to form new ones.
Eating a diet high in good fats is completely natural. Our ancestors ate this way for thousands of years, make sure that you focus on quality foods that fuel your body. When you eat a natural diet, you can heal your body from the inside out. You may also find that you spend less money because you’re not blowing it all on those junk foods at the grocery store.
Real food is medicine. So enjoy all the natural benefits of a healthy high-fat diet.
